“Thatcher was a prime minister who denounced Nelson Mandela as a terrorist, defended the Chilean fascist dictator Augusto Pinochet, ratcheted up the cold war, and unleashed militarised police on trade unionists and black communities alike. She was Britain’s first woman prime minister, but her policies hit women hardest, like Cameron’s today.”
Please remember the above statement if you go to see The Iron Lady and start to hail her as a feminist icon (she hated feminists).
i feel like @the-left-is-right will have something good to add to this!
OH. OH. OH MARGARET THATCHER ?
WELL , she was the worst prime minster stupid [sexist slurs excised]. She let a member of her OWN PARLIAMENT (Bobby Sands MP) die as well as 9 others (not in Parliament)while on hunger strike on her watch. Brutally aggressive to the Irish. AHHH I HATE THIS. I HATE HER. THIS MAKES ME MAD. I’M MAD , WHEN I’M MAD YOU WON’T LIKE ME WHEN I’M MAD…. (I eat a lot of food to cover my feelings)Meryl Streep would not be my choice to play Maggie Thatcher, but Boris Karloff is dead.
Let’s not forget either that she proposed in the early 80’s, as a public health policy, that all gay men should be forced into quarantine in closed institutions as an strategy to stop the spread of HIV infections. Basically internment camps for homosexuals.
Her government passed Clause 28 in 1988, which made it illegal to “portray homosexuality in a positive light.” It wasn’t repealed until 2003.
She was the inspiration for the original V for Vendetta comic and specifically the whole passage about what happened to Valerie.
And seriously, she was buddies with Pinochet, she was pretty evil.
lol Ashley is gonna hate me for this but the woman reminds me of Umbridge tbh. But, yeah, no, I only ever here awful things about this woman tbh :| Not a good choice Meryl Streep.
Here’s the thing…I hate Margaret Thatcher. I disagree with her policies and the course of action she undertook while Prime Minister. At the same time, I find her an incredibly fascinating piece of history. Margaret Thatcher did what she was supposed to do as Prime Minister - further her party’s interests in Parliament. That is the simple explanation of what you do in a party-driven system, and not an individual-driven system (like, say, the US, where your party affiliation can be as strong or as weak as you need it to be to win).
It also raises various questions about society and politics (and most of these came up in my Gender in Politics seminar, especially when talking about Margaret Thatcher, Condaleeza Rice, and so on). Should women promote women’s rights in government just because they are women? Why don’t we turn our backs on male politicians who fail to support women the same way we turn our backs on female politicians who do the same? Is it traitorous for a woman to work against her own kind in favor of party politics, individual, and/or religious beliefs? Can we still admire (?) anti-feminist women for making it to the top? Or should we not if the women play into typical hegemonic masculinity to “beat the boys?” Can we separate the act of making it “to the top” from what actually happens once you get there? Are they two separate things that deserve two separate analyses and reactions or are they intertwined in a way where disagreeing with what happens once you get to “the top” will also denounce the act of getting there?
Feminists are just so darn cute!
