I just finished Alanna: the First Adventure this afternoon, and I absolutely loved it. I love Alanna’s stubbornness and all her flaws as well as her strengths. I love how she has doubts and occasionally lacks faith in her plan. It makes her real and relate-able.
I also love how she isn’t the only one who dislikes the plan society dictates for her. Thom hates the fighting arts & would rather be a sorcerer. It bugs me, though, that with Alanna’s disguise, Thom can go become a sorcerer without anyone questioning his gender. Isn’t that the way the world often works? Men have more liberty in their choices, while women are often restricted to the private sphere.
The only qualms I have is that the copy I have has a handful of glaring typos. ”Know” instead of “no” and the like. There’s also a bit about how you can’t use magic to change your sex & the body the gods gave you, and I’m not sure how I feel about that.
All in all, I loved it, and I don’t know how I missed these books growing up!
